Yashica has made good on its month of teaser videos, launching the 14-megapixel Yashica Y35 digiFilm camera on Kickstarter today.

Also called the Yashica Electro 35, the new ‘digiFilm’ camera takes a minute to get your head around. The Yashica Y35 records images on to what the company is calling ‘digital film’.

Yashica’s digiFilm, in the company’s words, “features a glass lens for super sharp photos, an advanced automatic mode that makes sure every shot is perfectly exposed with an aperture of 2.8 as well as lot of creative digiFilm.

“We develop different “digiFilm” with its unique style and distinct effect. Designed for high quality images of different style such as ISO 1600 High Speed, ISO 400 Black & White, 120 format of 6×6 images and ISO 200 Ultra Fine. What’s more…? Lot of different digiFilms are coming to give photographers more opportunities to experiment and create beautiful images in different styles.”

What we think this means is that Yashica’s digiFilm contains a filter to create different effects, and there are multiple versions you can buy. For instance, its ISO 1600 High Speed digiFilm is designed for fast-moving subjects and high contrast scenes. ISO 200 Ultra Fine is for images where you want ultimate sharpness and strong colour balance.

The Yashica Y35 digiFilm camera records 14-megapixel images via its 1/3.2in CMOS sensor and offers a fixed focal length of 35mm.

Other things we know so far: the Yashica Y35 loads like a traditional film camera and even features a winder to advance the digiFilm. You press the shutter button to take an image, and the camera is powered by two AA batteries. You can see the full specs below.
