A Leica 0-series rangefinder camera has broken the record for the world’s most expensive camera, selling for more than £2.1 million (€2.4 million) at auction.

The Leica 0-series camera was purchased by an unnamed private collector from Asia when it went up for auction over the weekend at Vienna’s prestigious WestLicht Camera Auction.

The Leica 0-series is one of just 25 prototypes of the camera that were manufactured in 1923, some two years before the iconic camera brand officially launched.

Leica calls it a rare piece of camera history and says: “all parts including the paintwork are original, with the matching lens cover and the original folding finder.

“The camera also comes complete with a matching lens cover and the original folding finder, the unique film spool and take-up spool.”
