Finnish company Varjo is developing a new VR headset nicknamed ’20/20’, which it says will recreate human eye resolution at 70 megapixels per eye.

The 70-megapixel mark is a big leap forward over the 1.2 megapixels per eye offered by Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

However, it’s worth noting that Varjo says it will manage the data required to produce this level of resolution via foveated rendering.

What this means is that Varjo’s headset will only apply this top-end 70-megapixel resolution only to objects the user is looking at. Other elements within the wearer’s peripheral vision will display at a lower resolution.

A release date for Varjo’s 20/20 VR headset isn’t yet in the books, though the company has hinted that it might ship later this year.

In the meantime, the company has released a number of images comparing its headset resolution with a number of existing VR headsets on the market.
