British photographer Nick Dolding has won both the Open Portraiture category and the UK National Award at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards, organisers have announced.
Dolding’s image Emile beat out thousands of competitors and was selected by judges as the best single image in the Open Competition’s Potrait category as well as the best single image by a British photographer in any of the Open Competition’s ten categories.
Dolding will receive his award at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards gala in London next month.
An advertising photographer with 30 years’ experience, Dolding says: “In May 2017, I shot Emile on location in London, when I was commissioned to shoot stills for a commercial campaign.
“The campaign took its inspiration from Wes Anderson’s ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’. Emile’s styling was so fantastic I couldn’t resist shooting a portrait of him. In this image I wanted to retain the humour but have him looking aloof and ‘hoity’.”
Dolding was one of 63 National Award winners that were announced today. For more details on the other winners, visit the Sony World Photography Awards website.
