New Trump tariffs on German products could make Leica gear more expensive

News

Leica gear could be poised to get even more expensive for consumers in the United States as new tariffs set by President Trump take hold.

Trump has issued a new 25% tax on certain European products coming from Germany, which includes camera lenses and some of the components within digital cameras.

The new tariffs are set to take effect from 18 October 2019, and are being applied to a wide range of products such as metal tools, coffee and microwave ovens.

As L-Rumors points out, it’s possible that Leica could shift production to its Portuguese factory to try and get around the tariff. Though that remains to be seen.

The tariffs are part of a wider range of new taxes on goods coming from the European Union.
