The Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS: specs, price, release date announced

News

Sony has announced the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS super-telephoto lens for its E-mount camera.

Designed for shooting sport and wildlife, the new G-series lens is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. This takes the focal length to a maximum of 840mm at f/9 or 1200mm at f/13.

The lens also has optical stabilisation built-in with three mode settings.

Construction

Sony has used 5 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and an aspherical element, in a new optical design to minimise chromatic aberration.

Reflections, glare and ghosting are also reduced by the use of Sony’s original Nano AR coating. Meanwhile, the front element has a fluorine coating to resist dirt and fingerprints.

In addition, an 11-blade circular aperture helps deliver attractive bokeh.

Quiet Focusing

The Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS has Sony’s DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focusing system which is claimed to result in remarkably fast, accurate and quiet focusing.

In addition, the lens uses an internal zoom mechanism. This means that the length of the lens stays the same during zooming. That’s helpful with such a large optic as it makes it easier to maintain the balance. It also helps increase dust and moisture resistance – something that’s important to wildlife and sports photographers.

Quick an Easy Operation

Light zoom ring torque and a linear response manual focus mechanism are said to help make the new lens quick and easy to use.

There are also 3 customisable focus-hold buttons and a Focus Range Limiter switch that enable the lens to be set-up to suit the conditions.

Price and Availability

According to Sony, the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS will ship from August 2019 and will retail for approximately £1,800 / €2,100 / $2,000.

The Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS is available for pre-order now from Wex Photo Video and Park Cameras in the UK, and BH Photo Video in the US.
