Testing the GoPro Hero5 Black 4K time lapse mode

GoPro Hero6 Black vs GoPro Hero5 Black
Review

This time lapse was shot during part of a 24 hour trip to Spain to get more hands-on time with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. The main part of the trip involved a shooting tour at Reservatauro Ronda, a horse and cattle farm, with a selection of different shooting scenarios designed to test various features of the Olympus camera.

I used the GoPro Hero5 Black to record a 4K time lapse movie of the tour with the camera set to shoot with an interval of 0.5 seconds.

Shooting with an interval of 0.5sec meant I recorded 120 4K (8Mp) frames every minute. Playing back at 30 frames per second turns every minute of the shoot into 4 seconds of video. The GoPro was attached to the shoulder strap of a Peak Design Everyday Backpack using a Peak Design Capture POV Action Mount.

As you can see, the quality of the footage is very good and with each frame being made from an 8Mp image there’s plenty of detail visible. Exposure and dynamic range also seems good. It’s interesting to note how the white balance changes when the subject changes, for example, when I lift my arm to take a shot at around 6:40 and my sleeve dominates the frame.

Because the camera was moving between images, the footage isn’t smooth, but that’s to be expected with this type of time lapse. It also gives you taste of the shooting tour.
