Tamron has launched the 90mm F/2.8 Di III Macro VXD, its latest mid-telephoto macro lens, celebrating 45 years of innovation in the macro lens market. Available for both Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, this lens promises excellent resolution, sharpness, and bokeh, perfect for professional and enthusiast photographers alike. It continues the brand’s legacy of high-quality macro lenses, first introduced in 1979.

The 90mm F/2.8 Macro VXD features Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, delivering high-speed and precise autofocus performance. With a focusing accuracy of up to 0.005mm, the lens is ideal for both still and video photography. The quiet operation of the motor also makes it suitable for use in silent shooting environments, such as wildlife photography or quiet indoor settings.

This lens is built for versatility, offering 1:1 magnification and a close focusing distance of 0.23m, enabling photographers to capture true-to-life macro images. The bright f/2.8 aperture, combined with Tamron’s first-ever 12-blade circular diaphragm, creates stunningly smooth bokeh and vibrant starburst effects when the aperture is stopped down. Whether for portraits, close-ups of flowers, or tabletop photography, the 90mm F/2.8 is designed to deliver beautiful background blur while keeping the subject tack-sharp.

Optically, the lens features 15 elements in 12 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) elements to minimise chromatic aberrations and ensure edge-to-edge sharpness. The BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating further reduces ghosting and flare, even in backlit conditions, ensuring clean, high-contrast images.

Despite its robust features, the 90mm F/2.8 Macro VXD remains compact and portable. At only 126.5mm in length (Sony version) and weighing 630g, the lens is designed for easy carry and use. Additionally, Tamron’s innovative hood design includes a sliding window, allowing for easy filter adjustments without removing the hood.

Priced at around £800 ($1,000), the lens will be available from 24 October 2024. More details and sample images can be found on Tamron’s official website.
