Tamron has launched what it says is the world’s first telephoto all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C-format DSLRs, introducing the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD – price tag £649.00.

Available in Canon and Nikon mounts, the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (Model B028) offers a 22.2x zoom ration and extends to the 35mm equivalent of 620mm.

The new Tamron telephoto lens’s optical design consists of 16 elements in 11 groups and employs specialised glass elements such as LD (Low Dispersion) and aspherical lens elements to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion.

Its design also employs seven aperture blades, and the Tamron 18-400mm can focus as close as 0.45m (though this may change slightly in live view mode). The new Tamron lens also promises a moisture-resistant construction.

The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 also offers a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2:9, enabling tele-macro photography, Tamron says.

Other features include Tamron’s HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) motor, which helps keep focusing noise to a minimum by adjusting the lens’s motor rotation from low to high speed. What’s more, Tamron says it has been able to reduce the size of its HLD motor so that it takes up less space, allowing the company to reduce the size of the 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 lens.

The Nikon-fit lens weighs 705g, while the Canon version is ever-so-slightly larger at 710g. Likewise, the Nikon version measures 121.4mm, while the Canon-fit option is 123.9mm.

The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 employs a Vibration Compensation system to curb camera shake, as well as an electromagnetic diaphragm system in both the Canon and now Nikon mounts. This system offers more precise diaphragm and aperture control, Tamron says, because the diaphragm blades are controlled by a motor through electronic pulse signals.

Pre-order the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 in Canon EF or Nikon F mount.
