Sony has announced its new flagship smartphone, introducing the Sony Xperia XZ2, which boasts a new 4K HDR video mode and a 19-megapixel sensor.

Inside the Sony Xperia XZ2 (and XZ2 Compact launched alongside it) is a 1/2.3-inch sensor offering 19-megapixel resolution along with an f/2.0 aperture.

It’s a single sensor, unlike other brands’ flagship models that now often feature dual sensors for stronger bokeh effects.

But what the Xperia XZ2 introduces to smartphone photography and videography is a new 4K HDR video capability, which produces content you can share on YouTube or play on HDR-enabled TVs.

A built-in DRAM buffer helps shoulder the data processing load, which enables the phone to produce HDR video.

Sony has also upgraded its super slow motion mode from 960fps at 720p to 1080p on the Xperia XZ2; however, recording time drops from 0.2secs to 0.1secs on the new smartphone. This equates to just 3 seconds of playback compared to 6 seconds on its predecessor.

Other features of the Xperia XZ2 include an 18:9 Full HD display. However, the front camera resolution has been reduced to 5 megapixels to make space for this increased display.
