British photographer Alys Tomlinson has won the overall Photographer of the Year prize at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards.

Tomlinson won the $25,000 grand prize for her series Ex-Voto, which encompasses formal portraiture, large format landscape and small, detailed still-life images of the ‘ex-votos’ (offerings of religious devotion) found at pilgrimage sites at Lourdes (France), Ballyvourney (Ireland) and Grabarka (Poland).

Tomlinson was chosen from the 10 category winners of the Professional competition.

Bulgarian photographer Veselin Atanasov has won the Photographer of the Year prize for the Open competition

Bulgarian photographer Veselin Atanasov has won the Photographer of the Year prize for the Open competition. Veselin’s image, Early Autumn, was chosen from among the 10 category winners in the Open competition.

An IT specialist, Atanasov is a self-taught photographer who began shooting in 2014. The winning photograph captures autumn in the Central Balkan National Park. Veselin will take home a $5,000 prize.

American photographer Megan Johnson, age 16, took home the Youth Photographer of the Year prize for her black and white image Still…

And 20-year-old Canadian photographer Samuel Bolduc has won the Student Photographer of the Year competition for his series The Burden, documenting the environmental effects of plastic waste.
