Sony HX99 and HX95: specs, release date announced
News

Sony has announced the Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 and DSC-HX95, two new compact cameras set to go on sale in Europe from October.

Both feature ‘the world’s smallest’ body and a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-720mm zoom lens. With wide-angle and long telephoto focal lengths, they are designed for travel and everyday photography.

Inside, the HX99 and HX95 is a 1/2.3 type (7.82mm) Exmor R CMOS sensor with 18.2Mp.

As well as enabling 4K video recording to a memory card, the Bionz X image process facilitates a maximum continuous shooting rate of 10 frames per second.

In addition, the autofocus system has Sony‘s Eye AF technology, to make shooting portraits and social events easier.

Images can be captured in raw or jpeg format and the screens a touch-sensitive.

Viewfinder and Screen

Both cameras have a 0.2-inch 638,400-dot OLED Tru-Finder that can be popped-up for shooting in bright conditions.

Their 3-inch 921,600-dot touch-screens can also be tilted through 180 degrees for more creative images and selfie shooting. Touch Pad AF also allows the screen to be used to set the AF point while you look in the viewfinder. That’s a neat way of keeping the camera size down while allowing a good level of control.

Helpfully, there’s also a My Menu option that can be customised to give quick access to the features you use most often.

What’s the difference?

The only difference that we can spot so far between the two cameras is that the HX99 has a control ring on the lens barrel to give an additional means of control. This can be used to adjust features such as shutter speed, aperture and more

Both measure 102.0 x 58.1 x 35.5mm (4 1/8 x 2 3/8 x 1 7/16inch) but the HX99 weighs 242g (8.6oz) with the battery and card inserted while the HX95 weighs 243g (8.6oz). That weight difference isn’t going to be noticeable in use.
