The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS II is a full-frame telephoto lens for Sony’s E-mount mirrorless cameras and the replacement for the FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS. It doesn’t stay the same length during zooming, but at the 70mm point it’s 149mm long, making it 15% shorter than its predecessor. It also weighs 46g less, tipping the balance at just 794g
Despite the weight loss, the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS II is dust and moisture-resistant, and has a fluorine coating on its front element to repel water droplets and fingerprints.
Inside the barrel there are 19 elements arrange in 13 groups with one aspherical element, one advanced aspherical (AA) element, one Super ED (extra-low dispersion) element and three ED (extra-low dispersion) elements.
Sony’s Optical SteadyShot technology is built-in with three settings. Mode 1 is for general use, while Mode 2 is for use when panning. In Mode 3 the system stabilises the image in the viewfinder to make it easier to follow a subject.
Other controls on the FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS II include a Focus Range Limiter with three settings, an AF/MF switch, a Full-time DMF (direct manual focus) switch, three focus hold buttons and a zoom lock.
Enticingly, at its closest focusing point (26cm at 70mm and 42cm at 200mm), the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS II can capture half life-size (0.5x) images throughout its focal length range. Mounting the lens with Sony’s 2x Teleconverter takes the reproduction to life-size. That opens up a range of photographic opportunities.
The lens comes with a removable tripod foot and collar, and a lens hood.
