Sony has officially unveiled the A1 II, its latest flagship camera designed to cater to professional photographers and videographers. This successor to the acclaimed A1 combines high-resolution imaging, cutting-edge autofocus (AF), and enhanced video capabilities, setting a new standard for mirrorless camera performance.
Quick update – as you can see from the pictures I have a review sample of the Sony A1 II and will bring you the full review along with images soon..
At the core of the A1 II is the 50.1 MP full-frame Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor, paired with the Bionz XR processor and a dedicated AI processing unit. These elements deliver exceptional image quality, including 15-stops of dynamic range, and an extended ISO range of 50-102,400. A new IR sensor and AI processing elevate performance over its predecessor, particularly in autofocus. The camera supports 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) with up to 8.5 stops of performance in the center frame. Advanced features like Composite RAW shooting and 16-image Pixel Shift Multi Shooting create composites with resolutions up to 199 MP.
Autofocus enhancements include human pose estimation and AF tracking for vehicles, animals, and even insects. The 759-point phase detection AF system operates effectively in low light and maintains accuracy up to f/22. Continuous shooting captures up to 153 compressed RAW images at 30fps, with a customizable button for speed boost transitions.
Videographers will appreciate its ability to record 8K 16:9 footage oversampled from 8.6K, with 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 10-bit options. Additional support for S-Log3, S-Cinetone, LUTs, and high-performance stabilization enhances filmmaking workflows. For 4K recording, the camera supports frame rates up to 120fps.
The A1 II integrates seamless connectivity with Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB 10Gbps, and 2.5G Base-T LAN. A rear voice memo microphone and multiple IPTC presets add to its professional appeal.
Physically, the A1 II features a robust design with an improved grip and is compatible with the new VG-C4EM vertical grip. Its OLED viewfinder offers 9.44 million dots of resolution, while the 4-axis multi-angle screen supports versatile shooting angles.
