Skydio has launched the R1, price tag $2,499, a drone that it’s calling the world’s first fully autonomous flying camera.

Billed as ‘a new type of visual storytelling’, the Skydio R1 records 4K video from its 13 cameras, which users control via its companion mobile app, which Skydio says you can launch with one swipe of a finger.

Driving the Skydio R1 is the Skydio Autonomy Engine, which maps the landscape in real-time according to the company and allows it to independently navigate and capture footage independently.

The R1 is also powered by Skydio’s NVIDIA Jetson AI supercomputer, which enables the drone to plan its movements in real-time and navigate through complex landscapes.

Other features include cinematic modes such as Follow, Orbit and Side, as well as the ability to make HD video clips from your 4K footage via the app, which you can then share instantly from your phone.

The Skydio R1 is constructed of aluminium and carbon fibre, and the company says it is small enough to fit in your backpack.
