Sigma has announced that its full-frame L-mount Foveon camera will boast a 60.9-megapixel sensor, but will now be released in 2020, not 2019.

Sigma announced the news at the CP+ show in Japan. Technically the sensor is 20.3 megapixels, but because it has three sensor layers it bring the total resolution to 60.9 megapixels.

This design is a hallmark of Sigma’s previous sensor technology. Where more traditional Bayer sensors mix red, blue and green photo sites in a pattern across one layer, Sigma’s Foveon sensor feature a stacked design with a layer of red, blue and green each.

Sigma is developing the new sensor technology with TSI Semiconductors.
