Sigma has announced the development of a new 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens, which will be compatible for both Sony E-mount cameras and Micro Four Thirds mounts.

Sigma says the new 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary is the world’s first interchangeable lens for mirrorless Sony E-mount cameras in the APS-C format to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with an f/1.4 aperture.

The Micro Four Thirds version offers a 32mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with the same f/1.4 aperture.

The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary features a lens structure with 16 elements in 13 groups and Sigma says its optical design and stepping motor deliver smooth autofocus during video shooting.

Its mount also features a special sealing for a dust- and splash-proof design.

Sigma says the new lens also employs what’s called Thermally Stable Composite for a more compact structure and enhanced performance. TSC offers thermal expansion characteristics similar to those of aluminium.

Because parts made with TSC expand and contract less due to changes in temperature, they tend to perform better under extreme conditions and help maintain the performance of the lens, Sigma says. TSC also offers better elasticity compared to polycarbonate.

Sigma also announced that it will next add a telephoto lens to the Contemporary series, which will complete the range.

The 16mm f/1.4 will join Sigma’s 30mm f/1.4 DC DN in the company’s Contemporary lens range. The 30mm f/1.4 is compatible with both Micro Four Thirds and Sony E mounts.

Sigma launched its Contemporary range last year as a series of new prime lenses developed for mirrorless cameras.
