Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary for APS-C announced, specs, price, release date confirmed

News

The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is Sigma’s first lens designed specifically for APS-C format mirrorless cameras with the L or Sigma E mount. Its 18-50mm focal length translates to 27-75mm on APS-C format cameras, which is a good range for everyday photography including landscapes, street trees and still life.

It also has a constant aperture of f/2.8, which means backgrounds can be blurred and the exposure will not change during zooming.

In addition, there’s a minimum focusing distance of 12.1cm at which it has a maximum magnification factor of f:2.8.

According to Sigma, the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN C uses a stepping motor for focusing, which is fast and quiet.

Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN C construction

Sigma has given the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN C three high-precision glass-moulded aspherical elements to help reduce the number of elements required while delivering high-quality results.

In total it has 13 elements in 10 groups, with 1 SLD element and 3 aspherical elements.

The barrel is made from a polycarbonate called Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) to keep weight while still having thermal conductivity close to that of aluminium to maintain performance as the ambient temperature changes. However, some parts inside the lens are made from metal as this enables them to be thin yet rigid and reliable.

The lens is also dust- and splash-proof and has an internal focusing system so it doesn’t change length nor does the front element rotate during focusing.

Impressively, the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary measures just 65.4 x 74.5mm and weighs 290g.
