Sharp 8K camera price, release date reported in Japan

Sharp debuts 8K Micro Four Thirds camera at CES
News

Sharp posted the biggest surprise at CES 2019 in announcing its new Micro Four Thirds 8K video camera. Details were scarce other than images of the prototype, but now reports in Japanese media suggest the Sharp 8K camera price tag will be around $2,800 to $3,700 with a release date set for the summer.

The Japanese website Newswitch has reported that the Sharp 8K camera price tag will be between ¥300,000 to ¥400,000 yen, which equates to about $2,800 to $3,700.

If these reports are true, then the Sharp 8K camera price tag will make it the first camera able to record video at that resolution priced less than $5,000.

As an addendum to this story, Nikkei has also reported that Sharp and Foxconn – which owns a majority share in Sharp – were initially looking to invest in RED to develop an 8K video camera. Recent reports have suggested that RED is also currently looking to develop an 8K-capable camera.

Not much else is known yet about the Sharp 8K camera, other than it bears a striking resemblance to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

On the back is a 5-inch touchscreen, which articulates, and Sharp says its video camera will be able to record 8K video at 30fps in H.265 codec. What’s more, the company says it’s developing a 60fps recording at a lower resolution.

Other things we know: there will be on-sensor stabilisation, though no further sensor information has been given other than it is MFT format.
