Sennheiser is marking a major milestone in pro audio history as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of its iconic MKH 416 shotgun microphone. Introduced in 1975, the MKH 416 has become one of the most trusted tools in the film, broadcast, and content creation industries, known for its unmistakable sound character, rugged build, and consistent performance in challenging environments.

Favoured by location sound professionals, voice-over artists, and sound designers alike, the MKH 416 features a short interference tube and a supercardioid/lobar pickup pattern that offers outstanding directivity, making it ideal for capturing clear dialogue in noisy or reflective environments. Its RF condenser design ensures reliable operation even in adverse weather conditions, where humidity and temperature fluctuations can cause issues for conventional condenser microphones.

Over the decades, the MKH 416 has played a central role in countless Hollywood productions, documentaries, and television broadcasts. Its distinctive presence in the sound recording world has made it an industry reference point—often praised for its crisp clarity, excellent off-axis rejection, and natural tone.

“The MKH 416 is a legend. Its longevity is a testament not only to the microphone’s exceptional quality and durability but also to the trust it has earned from generations of audio professionals,” said Achim Gleissner, Commercial Lead Business Communication at Sennheiser.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, Sennheiser has launched a commemorative campaign highlighting the legacy of the microphone, sharing testimonials and behind-the-scenes stories from long-time users in film and broadcast. The MKH 416 remains in production today, largely unchanged—underscoring the strength of its original design and enduring demand.
