Samsung has lived up to its promises of ‘the camera reimagined’, announcing the Galaxy S9 and S9+, which feature variable apertures and the opportunity to create super slow-motion videos.

Samsung had been teasing the Galaxy S9’s features hard over the past month, and at the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona formally unveiled what we’d all been expecting.

The signature feature of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras is a new variable aperture that can switch between f/1.5 in low-light conditions and f/2.4 in stronger light.

Powering both cameras is a 12-megapixel Super Speed sensor, coupled with a DRAM module for extra processing power which helps enable the Galaxy S9 and S9+ super-slow-motion modes.

With the new Super Slow-motion modes users can shoot video at 960 frames per second for 0.2 seconds, which equates to 6 seconds of playback. You can also convert these videos into gifs.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also offers automatic Motion Detection, which detects movement in the frame and automatically begins to record – meaning all that users have to do is set up the shot.

After capturing a Super Slow-mo video, you can then select background music from 35 different options or add a tune from your favourite playlist.

AR Emoji is another new feature of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras, which Samsung teased prior to its launch. Employing a data-based machine learning algorithm that analyses your 2D images, it then maps out facial features to create a 3D model that can imitate common expressions. You can then use this personalised emoji across most third-party messaging platforms, Samsung says. You can save up to 18 emojis, if you’re into that kinda thing.

So what’s the key difference between the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+? The S9 features a 5.77-inch AMOLED screen, while the S9+ boasts a 6.22-inch display.

Otherwise, both share the same specifications, as well as microSD card slots and a headphone jack, which are becoming rarer these days.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are available in Midnight Black, Coral Blue and Lilac Purple. The Galaxy S9 is priced £739, while the Galaxy S9+ price tag is £869.
