Samsung has launched the SSD T5 – price tag starting $129.99 – a new portable solid state drive that it claims can deliver transfer speeds of up to 540MB per second.

The T5 employs Samsung’s new 64-layer V-NAND technology, which the company says is up to 4.9 times faster than external HDD devices.

It also measures in smaller than a business card at 74 x 57.3 x 10.5 millimeters (3.0 x 2.3 x 0.4 inches). It also weighs just 51g.

What’s more, it boasts a shock-resistant internal frame and can withstand drops of up to 6.6 feet, or 2 metres.

As well as speed, Samsung says the T5 offers encrypted data security. The Samsung Portable SSD Software for PCs and Macs based on the AES 256-bit hardware data encryption makes it easy to configure security settings and receive new firmware and software updates, Samsung says.

A mobile app is also available for Android smartphones and tablets.

The Samsung T5 exterior is made of aluminium and comes in Black in 1TB or 2TB capacities or in Blue in 250GB and 500GB capacities. It also comes with a three-year warranty.

The Samsung T5 price tag starts at $129.99 for the 250GB model. For more details visit Samsung’s website.
