Our Verdict

It may seem counterintuitive that adding extra weight to something can make it seem lighter, but that’s certainly the case with the SmallRig Sling Grip for Zhiyun Crane 2S. It makes the gimbal easier to handle, especially when shooting from a low angle, and as the camera seems better-balanced, it’s easier to maintain a shooting position. If you have a Zhiyun Crane 2S, I’d seriously consider adding this Grip from SmallRig.

For

  • Easy to attach
  • Rosette connector allows angle adjustment
  • Makes the gimbal easier to use for some shots

Against

  • Additional cost
  • Only connects at one point on the gimbal

What is the SmallRig Sling Grip for Zhiyun Crane 2S?

If you’ve read our Zhiyun Crane 2S review you’ll know that it’s an excellent motorised gimbal that’s designed to take some of the shake and wobble out of hand-held video shot on DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It does a great job, but at 1.8Kg without the batteries or the mini tripod/extension, it’s a hefty weight to carry.

That weight feels particularly heavy when you shoot from a low angle with the camera out in front or behind you.  The SmallRig Sling Grip for Zhiyun Crane 2S is designed to help with that.

The SmallRig Sling Grip for Zhiyun Crane 2S has a clamp that fits around the top of the gimbal handle and rubberised grip section that can be rotated to the desired angle to form a second handle for the gimbal.

Performance

Obviously, adding a second handle or grip to the Zhiyun Crane 2S makes the whole thing heavier, but it also means that your hands aren’t both in the same plane and it’s easier to manoeuvre the gimbal into position.

In addition, the rosette joint on the handle means that you can put it at the perfect angle for your shot. I generally use it almost parallel to the main handle.

The Grip has indentations that align with lugs at the top of the Crane 2S’s handle. As there are three lugs, the grip can be positioned at three separate angles around the handle, but it makes sense to me to have it at the back of the gimbal in alignment with the rear roll motor.

SmallRig has put a silicon coating on the grip, which gives it more purchase and makes it comfortable to hold. It’s also warmer than bare metal.

As someone who finds the Crane 2S handle a bit too thick, the SmallRig grip has a significant positive impact on my level of comfort when using the gimbal. It can be attached and detached in a matter of seconds, but I think it’s unlikely I will use the Crane 2S without the SmallRig Sling Grip.
