What is the Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters Kit?

The Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters Kit is an easy-to-use neutral density filter system that relies on magnetic attraction to hold the filters on a camera lens.

It’s available in a range of sizes so you can buy one to suit your lenses. As a rule, buy the biggest size you might need and then buy step-up rings so that it can be used on your smaller lenses as well as the larger ones.

The supplied magnetic adapter screws on to the end of a lens to enable the filters to be snapped on and off in a flash.

Features

There are two varieties of the Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters Kit, the Entry version and the Professional version. Both kits include a Magnetic Lens Adapter, a Magnetic Circular Polariser, a Wolverine ND8 (3 stop) Neutral Density Filter, a Wolverine ND64 (6 stop) Neutral Density Filter, a Magnetic Lens Cap and a Carry Pouch. The professional kit adds a Wolverine ND1000 (10 stop) Neutral Density Filter to the mix.

The kits are also available in a range of sizes from 67mm to 95mm and they can be teamed with step-up rings to increase the range of compatible lenses.

While the filter threads are made from aluminium, the filters are made from scratch-resistant glass and have an Infrared cut-off coating that’s easy to clean.

Build and Handling

Kase supplies the kit with a smart leather case that gives the filters good protection without taking up lots of space in your camera bag.

The adapter rings and filters themselves are fairly unremarkable. The adapter screws onto a lens’ filter thread easily, allowing a filter to snap on with magnetic attraction.

Once the adapter ring is mounted, it’s easy to swap between the various filters, or to stack them, as you need. Between shots, with the magnetic adapter still in place, you can pop on the Magnetic Lens Cap to protect your filters or lens.

Performance

Kase uses the same optical materials for its Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters as it does for its Wolverine 100mm filter kits. This is great news because they produce neutral images with no colour cast even when the densest filters are used to enable very long exposure times.

Further good news is that the motionless part of the images are still sharp and have plenty of detail.

Verdict

While a rectangular filter holder system is useful for when you want to use a graduated filter, they add bulk to your kit. You also have to handle the filters carefully as you slot them into the holder.

Circular filters lack the bulk, but they can be a pain to fit as you have to take care as you thread them onto a lens. Misthread one and you could end up with a filter that falls off or gets stuck on. The Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters Kit makes life a bit easier by enabling the filters to be attached magnetically, you just need to thread on the magnetic adapter – and once you’ve done that, it can stay on.

If you’re a fan of long exposure photography, or if you’re a videographer who likes to shoot at wide apertures, the Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters Kit is well worth considering. It’s easy to use and filters produce high-quality results.

Make sure you buy a magnetic adapter for each of your lenses to save having to swap it between optics.
