Report: Nikon 1 mirrorless system to end production – UPDATE

Nikon 1 J5 firmware update fixes image deletion bug
News

The Nikon 1 mirrorless system will soon be ending its production, according to a leading German photographic website.

While there has been no announcement of an official cancellation from Nikon, Digital Kamera reports that it has checked existing stock on a number of Nikon 1 cameras and found that most of the cameras in the system are in what it calls an ‘End of Life’ stage.

We always check which cameras are still available and which are obviously “End of Life” as it is called “EoL”. This time it hit the Nikon 1 AW1 and the Nikon 1 V3. Also from 1 J5, only the existing stock is sold. What appears to be a longer time is now obvious: The Nikon 1 system is running out. There is no official cancellation for the Nikon-1 system from Nikon so far. This would not be customary either. It is rare that cameras or camera systems are officially discontinued by manufacturers. Nikon Rumors has corroborated the claims, checking stock on the Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, S1, S2, V1, V2 and V3 mirrorless cameras and found that all are listed as discontinued. In fact, it says the only Nikon 1 cameras not discontinued are the J5 and AW1 rugged camera.

Nikon, of course, has been hinting not-so-subtly that it is working on a full-frame mirrorless camera that will be aimed at professionals – and could perhaps have a curved sensor.

Nikon told us at Photokina 2016 that it had a full-frame mirrorless system in its sights. And last month the company’s CEO told a French magazine that it was developing a full-frame mirrorless that would outpace its rivals.

Could a new system be the motivation for letting the Nikon 1 system quietly drift away? It’s entirely possible.

Update – 4 August

Nikon has responded to Digital Kamera’s report that its Nikon 1 mirrorless camera line will cease production.

In a statement to DPReview, the company says

“Nikon continues to produce and sell the Nikon 1 line. We cannot comment on future product or speculation.”
