RED Digital Cinema, now a subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, has unveiled the first cameras in its new Z CINEMA series: the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount. These high-performance digital cinema cameras integrate the Nikon Z mount, offering filmmakers access to Nikon’s expanding range of NIKKOR Z lenses, as well as legacy F-mount glass via the FTZ II adapter. The collaboration between RED and Nikon brings together RED’s industry-leading colour science and image compression technology with Nikon’s renowned optical performance.
The Z mount, known for its large diameter and short flange distance, allows filmmakers to capture high-resolution imagery with exceptional edge-to-edge clarity. The cameras also benefit from improved autofocus performance, making them even more versatile for professional filmmaking applications. Both models are fully compatible with Nikon’s newly announced NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ power zoom lens, enhancing their potential for cinematic productions.
RED V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount
As RED’s flagship digital cinema camera, the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount features an 8K VV (Vista Vision) global shutter sensor with exceptional low-light performance, dynamic range, and high frame rates. The sensor, which supports RED’s Global Vision suite of imaging tools, delivers a dynamic range of up to 20+ stops in Extended Highlights mode. This allows filmmakers to capture fine details and smooth highlight roll-offs, even in challenging lighting conditions.
RED KOMODO-X Z Mount
The KOMODO-X Z Mount is a compact yet powerful digital cinema camera featuring a 6K Super 35 global shutter sensor. Designed for speed and efficiency, it supports 6K recording at up to 80 fps and 4K recording at up to 120 fps. The camera also benefits from RED’s proprietary colour science, developed over two decades in the filmmaking industry, ensuring accurate, cinema-quality colour reproduction. In addition, it supports RED’s R3D Redcode RAW format, providing greater flexibility in post-production while maintaining efficient data management.
PL Mount Compatibility
To expand lens compatibility, RED has introduced two optional mount adapters: the RED Z to PL Adapter Pack and the RED Z to PL with Electronic ND Adapter Pack, enabling the use of professional PL-mount lenses with both Z CINEMA models.
