One of the frustrating things about Instagram for many users is that it doesn’t allow you to post images from your computer.

Most photographers, of course, come back from a day’s shooting and download images from their memory cards onto their computer.

So unless your camera has functionality like Nikon’s SnapBridge or a companion app that allows you to transfer images to your phone, many photographers will find an extra layer of complexity in sharing their images to Instagram.

Photographer Felix Sun, however, has developed a free app called Windowed that allows photographers to break down this barrier and post images to Instagram directly from your computer.

Sun used an open source platform to develop the app that takes advantage of a tiny loophole in Instagram’s functionality.

Instagram will allow you to upload images to its website if you’re using a mobile browser. Windowed effectively mimics a mobile browser so computers can upload to Instagram.

“Instagram already provides the functionality to upload photos through a web browser, but sadly this feature is locked to mobile web browsers only,” Sun writes. “Windowed overcomes this issue by pretending to be a mobile browser, allowing you to visit the Instagram mobile website directly from your Mac or Windows PC.”

What’s more, Windowed doesn’t need access to your Instagram account details, Sun adds, because you are logging in directly to the Instagram website.

Once logged in via Windowed, click the camera icon in the top navigation bar to begin uploading images. Click here to download the app.
