Pixii, a new French startup, has announced its first camera which is a digital rangefinder that lacks a display and connects to your smartphone.

Calling it a ‘radical take on what a modern camera should be’, the Pixii will support Leica M mount lenses.

Pixii hasn’t yet revealed the size of the sensor, nor its resolution, but we do know that it will be a CMOS sensor with a global electronic shutter and 12-bit sampling.

How the Pixii works

With no display on the back of the Pixii, you can slide your smartphone into the back and use it as the display to compose your images.

Or, if you prefer, there is also an optical viewfinder on top of the Pixii. The 0.67x optical viewfinder offers backlit LED frame lines showing 40/50mm and 28/35mm fields of view.

As well as no display, the Pixii will also have no memory card slots. Instead, you can purchase versions with either 8GB or 32GB of internal storage.

Pixii hasn’t yet revealed any price details, but it’s thought that it may cost about half of what a Leica M costs.
