Noor Ahmed Gelal has won the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2018 competition for his image Praying with Food, organisers have announced.
The Bangladeshi photographer’s winning image depicts people breaking a day-long fast at a Hindu temple in Dhaka and was praised by judges for making the subject matter ‘so fascinating and distinctive.’
As the overall winner, Gelal received his £5,000 grand prize at a Champagne Tattinger reception at the Mall Galleries in London.
Judges say there were more than 8,000 images entered this year from 60 countries.
Magnum legend Martin Parr was also on hand to collect the Outstanding Achievement Award from Tate Britain director, Frances Morris.
Renowned food photographer David Loftus chaired the judging panel this year, which also included Emily Luchetti, Chair of the James Beard Foundation, NYC, culinary superstar Ferran Adria, Wajmar Yaqubi, Global Photo Director, Buzzfeed, His Excellency Ali Bin Thalith, Secretary General, HIPA.
Ruby Smend, Stefan Dedu and William Lindsay-Perez won the 10 and Under, 11-14 and 15-17 Years youth categories, respectively.
Aniko Lueff, of the UK, won the Food Blogger category, while fellow UK photographers Guillaume Flandre and Jade Nina Sarkhel won the Food in the Field and Food for Sale categories, respectively. Other winners include:
