Pholio is a new hard drive that uses technology similar to cloud storage platforms to automatically search your computer or device for new images and back them up.

Available in 500GB or a ‘Pro’ 2TB capacities, the Pholio hard drive backs up all your images and videos when connected to a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.

It’s both Mac and PC compatible, and you can choose whether to back up images at full size or in smaller versions. If you choose to save smaller file sizes, Pholio also provides a link to the full-resolution image.

The device is seeking funding on Kickstarter, where you can bag a 500GB version for £200.

Its makers say the Pholio employs 20,000 internal descriptors that make it easy to automatically tag and search for your images. What’s more, the Pholio is capable of learning when you want to add keywords.

Other tech like face detection enables it to create albums for specific people you may photograph most often.

Updates to the system will expand these capabilities even further, its makers say.

The current campaign runs until January 2018.
