Panasonic S5IIX: price, specs, release date officially announced

News

The Panasonic S5IIX price tag will be €2,499 / £2,299 / $2,199 with a release date set for the summer of 2023, the company has officially announced.

Panasonic revealed the Lumix S5IIX was in development earlier this year at CES in Las Vegas. The camera was announced alongside its sibling, the Panasonic Lumix S5II. The S5IIX is the more advanced of the two cameras and boasts more capabilities for recording video.

Looking at the Panasonic S5II vs S5IIX, you’ll notice that many of the core video specs overlap. Both cameras can shoot 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (3:2) and 5.9K (16:9) footage at 30fps, and 4:2:2 C4K and 4K at up to 60fps. What sets the S5IIX apart, however, is its ability to record 5.8K Apple ProRes footage to an external device, such as an Atomos Ninja V or Shogun CONNECT straight from the box.

Another difference is that the Lumix S5IIX supports wired and wireless IP streaming and USB tethering. You’ll also find a Slow & Quick mode that can capture C4K 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 10-bit video at 1-60 fps (up to 30p)

Inside the Panasonic S5IIX is a 24.2MP full-frame (35.6×23.8mm) CMOS sensor, which features phase detection pixels that form its hybrid focusing system. Panasonic’s new Phase Hybrid AF system promises to detect subjects in harsh conditions, such as low light and backlighting, and remain tracking them even when other moving objects are in the frame.

The Panasonic S5IIX also features a new imaging engine developed by the L2 Technology partnership between Leica and Panasonic.

Like the S5II, the Panasonic S5IIX is made of magnesium alloy and is weather-sealed to prevent moisture and dust.
