UPDATE: Panasonic reveals more specs at CES 2019

On the eve of CES 2019, Panasonic has revealed more S1 / S1R specs and what we can expect from its full-frame mirrorless cameras. From the company’s press statement:

A whole new style of photo expression with High Dynamic Range Still Photo: HLG Photo Mode

HLG Photo allows images to be shot with a wider dynamic range. Rich, precise colour expression as close as possible to visual memory is enabled by reproducing both glaring lights and dark shadows that were likely to be overexposed or underexposed.

HLG Photos are produced as an HSP file. The user can playback these vibrant images on the latest Panasonic HLG-compliant 4KTV via HDMI cable connection or other HLG-compliant devices. It is also ideal for photo presentations by photographers.

High Resolution Mode: Stunning details with a realistic sensation

Taking advantage of the Body I.S. (Image Stabilizer) mechanism, eight consecutive images are automatically shot while shifting the sensor. These eight images are synthesized into a single image by the new Venus Engine, which boasts high-speed signal processing. Precise details are faithfully reproduced to be saved as a beautiful, highly realistic image. This mode is ideal for taking natural landscapes or fine art objects with delicate details.

In situations where the scene includes moving subjects, sub-options are available to suppress motion blur, enabling photographers to use this mode just like when they shoot in a normal photo shooting mode.

What’s more, Panasonic has confirmed that its new LUMIX S full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses will be available from the end of March 2019.

Original Story

Panasonic USA has sent an email out to its subscribers inviting them to come visit its stand at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week to preview its new full-frame S1 and S1R mirrorless cameras.

What’s more, Panasonic will be holding a press event at 10am (Las Vegas time) on 7 January, the day before CES kicks off.

This suggests a couple things. First, it could mean that we will finally get the full list of specifications for both the S1 and S1R cameras, which were announced as development projects at Photokina 2018 back in September.

It also suggests that we probably won’t be seeing any new Panasonic gear announcements at CES, which isn’t all that surprising given the volume and depth of what the company launched in 2018, its 100th anniversary.

Here’s what we know so far about the Panasonic S1 and S1R:

The Panasonic S1 will use a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, while the Panasonic S1R will boast a 47-megapixel sensor.

The Lumix S1 will be positioned as a hybrid entry-level full-frame camera designed for both stills and video, while the Lumix S1R will be aimed at professional users.

Both Panasonic full frame cameras will feature the same body design and specifications, with the sensor being the main difference between the Panasonic S1R and S1.

The Panasonic full frame cameras will be the world’s first to support 4K video recording in a full frame digital single lens mirrorless camera at 60p/50p, Panasonic says.

Panasonic is also stating that the Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R will boast the world’s fastest autofocus for interchangeable lens cameras.

What’s more, the company says the Lumix S1 and Lumix S1R will be the world’s first full frame cameras equipped with Dual IS image stabilisation.

Other features include dual slots for XQD and SD memory cards and a vari-angle LCD screen.

We’ll be providing full coverage of all the announcements at CES as they happen.
