Panasonic has announced the Lumix G90 (aka Panasonic Lumix G95 and G91) – price starting from £899.99 / €1,075.00 /$1199 – a new enthusiast-level mirrorless camera with the Micro Four Thirds mount. It’s designed to appeal to both photographers and videographers, having advanced features that should win approval from both types of user.
Inside the G90 is a 20.3Mp Digital Live MOS sensor and Panasonic’s latest Venus Engine. Although it’s similar to the Panasonic G9’s, and it doesn’t have an optical low-pass filter, the G90’s sensor is new.
Sharpness levels are also boosted in stills and video by the onboard 5-axis Dual I.S. (Image Stabiliser) 2. This uses both OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser) with IBIS (In-Body Image Stabiliser) to compensate for camera movement. It’s said to offer up to 5-stops shutter speed compensation.
Panasonic has used OLED technology for both the 2,360k-dot electronic viewfinder and the 3-inch 1040k-dot vari-angle screen on the back of the camera.
Autofocus System
Panasonic claims the G90 can focus in just 0.07sec and can shoot at up to 9fps in AF-S. This drops to 6fps in continuous AF mode.
The G90 can also track moving subjects and has controls to enables users to adjust the sensitivity and speed of the AF system.
There’s a collection of AF point selection modes including Face / Eye Detection AF, Pinpoint AF to target small areas and Custom Multi AF which enables users to specify an area from 49 focus points. Video Features
The G90 is cable of shooting unlimited 4K and Full HD video at a range of frame rates. There’s also a mini HDMI port that facilitates external recording with 4:2:2 8-bit colour. It’s also possible to save 4:2:0 8-bit footage to a memory card in the single SD-type UHS-II compatible card slot.
Further good news is that V-Log L pre-installed. This means flat footage with up to 12 stops of dynamic range can be recorded in-camera.
There’s also a 3.5mm microphone socket and headphone jack to allow high-quality audio recording and monitoring.
As usual with Panasonic Lumix cameras, 4K Photo mode is available to help capture fleeting moments. The G90 also gains Sequence Composition and Auto Marking. The latter helps find the right frames to save as 8Mp stills.
Redesigned Body
Panasonic has designed the body of the G90 for easy one-handed operation. Like the G9 above it in the range, it has three buttons on the top plate for adjusting exposure compensation, ISO and white balance.
Meanwhile, the buttons on the back are positioned around the wheel dial for quicker access.
Front and rear dials are provided for adjusting settings.
The front frame of the G90 is made from die-cast magnesium alloy and seals ensure that all the joints and controls are splash and dust-resistant.
