I’ve shot rugby in the pouring rain with the Panasonic Lumix G9, so I know it can be relied upon for shooting sport – and it’s weatherproof. But perhaps a better endorsement of its sports photography credentials is that Team GB photographer, Andy Ryan used it to photograph the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Ryan was there, with support from Panasonic, to document young athletes at the global sporting event. As you can see from the images below, he was able to capture a wide range of sports, including fast-moving equestrian and triathlon events as well as indoor events in low light.

The Youth Olympic Games are faced-paced, but the G9 coped well. Its maximum shooting rate of 60fps and 0.04 second AF speed with high tracking performance, helped it capture fleeting moments. Capturing the arrow as it flew from Alyssia Tromans-Ansell bow in the Women’s Archery, for example, takes speed and timing.

Barnaby Sykes, Category Manager Imaging at Panasonic said: “Panasonic has supported the Olympic Games for over a quarter of a century and we were delighted to extend our support to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Our Lumix G9 camera is the perfect tool for the sports photographer and was instrumental for Andy Ryan to document Team GB athletes in their sporting events, increasing awareness and support of this important occasion.“

About the Games

The Youth Olympic Games are held every four years, this year taking place during October in Argentina. They involve athletes aged 15 to 18 from over 200 countries around the world.

This year Team GB won 15 medals. Three of these were gold, while six were silver and six were bronze.

The team’s biggest success was in the boxing where Karol Itauma, Caroline Dubois, and Ivan Hope Price each won a gold medal. Meanwhile, Hassan Azim was awarded a bronze medal.
