Panasonic has launched what it’s calling a premium street photography camera, introducing the Panasonic GX9 – price tag £699 body-only with a release date set for March.

Panasonic says the new GX9 will not replace the GX8, and design-wise it more closely resembles the entry-level GX800.

Inside the Panasonic GX9 is a 20.3-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor that is designed without a low-pass, or anti-aliasing, filter in order to resolve finer detail.

Among the Panasonic GX9’s other key specs are a high-resolution tilting viewfinder, a tilting touch-sensitive LCD screen, 4K Photo and Video modes and an optimised gradation setting for wider dynamic range.

The new tilting Live View Filter (LVF) can move 80 degrees, and the Live View Finder Eye Sensor AF start auto focusing as soon as it’s in use, Panasonic says. The LVF boasts 2760k-dot resolution, as well, and offers a 100% field of view.

The 3-inch rear LCD also tilts up by 80 degrees and down 45 degrees, offering 1240k-dot resolution.

The GX9 also offers a Contrast AF System that employs Panasonic’s Depth From Defocus (DFD) technology, which gives the GX9 a high-speed AF of 0.07sec, Panasonic says, as well as 9fps (AFS) and 6fps (AFC) burst shooting.

The Panasonic GX9 can also record 4K video in 3840×2160 25p(50Hz Area) or 24p in MP4. The Panasonic’s 4K Photo mode lets you capture fast-moving subjects at 30fps in 8-megapixel resolution.

A new Auto Marking function lets users jump to a frame where the difference is obvious between consequent frames. The Auto Marking function is designed to help reduce the time you spend choosing the best shot.

What’s more, the GX9’s 4K Photo mode features the new Light Composition option. This combines your images by choosing and saving the brighter pixel and is aimed at nighttime scenes such as fireworks.

Also inside the Panasonic GX9 is the company’s 5-axis Dual IS. Combining a 2-axis Optical Image Stabiliser and a Body Image Stabiliser (5-axis). The 5-axis Dual IS allows you to shoot at a 4-stop slower shutter speed, Panasonic says.

The 5-axis Dual I.S. works in both photo and video modes, including 4K video.

Other features include a new Silent Mode that eliminates shutter noise, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Battery life is 900 images per single charge, Panasonic says.
