Panasonic has unveiled yet another new camera at Photokina 2016, announcing the development of the Panasonic GH5, which can record 4K video at 60p/50p frame rates, a world’s first according to Panasonic.

Aimed at professional videographers and photographers, the Panasonic GH5 can record faithfully reproductive 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video and marks a big jump over the GH4’s 4K 30p/25p recording.

The Panasonic GH5 also introduces the company’s new 6K PHOTO technology, which allows photographers to extract 18-megapixel equivalent still frames from video footage. What’s more, the 8-megapixel ‘4K PHOTO’ equivalent is still available from video shot at 60p.

The new Panasonic camera also debuts alongside a new LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT F2.8-4.0 lens series. Among the optics in the series are a new 12-60mm standard zoom lens, an 8-18mm wide zoom lens and a 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens.

A replacement for the Panasonic GH4 has been anticipated for sometime so the news that the Panasonic GH5 is in development and will be on sale in the first half of 2017 will be welcome news for lots of dedicated videographers.

Whereas the GH4 is 4K-enabled, the GH5 is capable of shoot 6K video. And with 6K video comes 6K Photo mode – the ability to extract 18Mp still images from footage shot at 30fps.

Panasonic has two prototype GH5 camera’s on display in perspex cases at Photokina. The design looks very similar to the GH4, but crucially where the GH4 has 4K on the drive mode dial, the GH5 has 6K.

On the opposite side of the top-plate, there’s an exposure mode with the usual PASM options along with three Custom settings and the video option.

The announcements coincide with new launches the Panasonic G80, Panasonic FZ2000 and Panasonic LX15, all of which are on show at Photokina in Cologne, Germany.
