News

OM System has announced two new lenses for its Micro Four Thirds series cameras, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0 Pro and M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro II.

While the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro II is a relatively minor upgrade to the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0 Pro is a completely new lens.

In comparison with the original 12-40mm lens, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro II has upgraded weather-sealing to bring it up to the same IP53 standard as the OM System OM-1 announced at the same time.

The new version of the lens also gains a fluorine coating on the front element to make it easier to clean and more inclined to shed water droplets.

Like the previous incarnation, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 Pro II is constructed from 14 elements arranged in 9 groups with 1 EDA lens, 2 aspherical lenses, 1 DSA lens, 2 ED lenses, 1 HD lens, 2 HR lens and 4 aspherical lenses (including the DSA lens). The upshot is a compact lightweight lens that delivers an effective focal length of 24-80mm on a Micro Four Thirds camera.

According to OM System, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0 Pro is the world’s most compact, lightweight and high-image quality telephoto zoom lens. A bold claim.

The news lens uses a similar design to the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 Pro and has 15 elements in 9 groups with 2 ED lenses, 1 Super ED lens, 1 HR lens and 2 aspherical lenses. It produces a focal length range equivalent to an 80-300mm lens on a full-frame camera.

These special optics are said to suppress chromatic aberration, which can be an issue with telephoto lenses, and delivers high-resolution at maximum aperture thought the zoom range.

OM System has also applied its ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating to minimise ghosting and flare.

Thanks to a retracting mechanism, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0 Pro is the world’s most compact, lightweight telephoto zoom lens with a fixed aperture and a 300mm equivalent focal length. It’s 99.4 mm in length when collapsed and 124 mm long when extended for use. In addition, it weighs just 382g. For comparison, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f2.8 Pro is 160mm long and weighs 760g.
