One of the big headlines of the brand new Olympus OM-D E-M1 II, announced at this year’s Photokina 2016, is its optical image stabilisation system.

The 5-axis system gives you up to 6.5 EV steps of compensation, which, according to Toshi Terada, General Manager for the Olympus’ Global Marketing Department, means you can shoot for two seconds handheld and still get sharp images.

Speaking to Camera Jabber at Photokina, Terada said, “6.5 EV is a really amazing number. If you use a wide angle lens, you can shoot handheld for up to two seconds.”

“You can get really sharp images, handheld. Every photographer who tested this camera they are really really amazed by this feature.”

Being able to shoot handheld at these slow shutter speeds opens up a world of possibilities for low-light photography, sports and wildlife photography, and could remove the need for some photographers to carry around a heavy or bulky tripod. The creative possibilities are also intriguing.

We look forward to trying out the system for ourselves when full production samples become available.
