Nikon surpasses 100 millionth lens milestone

News

Total production of NIKKOR lenses for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras passed the 100 million milestone in June 2016, the company has announced.

It’s most recent addition, the new AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED, announced on 27 July 2016, comes some 84 years after the NIKKOR brand was launched by the then-Nippon Kogaku K.K. company, which unveiled its line of Aero-Nikko aerial photographic lenses the next year.

Nikon says the NIKKOR name arose from adding an “r” – a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time – to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., Nikon’s original name.

Nikon’s range of NIKKOR lenses consists of more than 90 types of lenses, from prime lenses to ultra wide-angle and super-telephoto lenses to fisheyes, zoom lenses, micro lenses and PC-E lenses, as well as 1 NIKKOR lenses.

Nikon’s recent lenses feature its new OPTIA technology, a device for measuring all forms of aberration occurring with photographic lenses, as well as a dedicated image simulator, that is used with OPTIA.

The image simulator (software) enables simulation at the design stage that is equivalent to actual photography with lens prototypes. Nikon says this allows its lenses to offer greater control over resolution, texture, depth and bokeh.

The new AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED employs OPTIA. This lens embodies the “three-dimensional high-fidelity (superior reproduction characteristics)” design concept, with a more natural reproduction of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional photograph, Nikon claims.
