Nikon has announced the release of firmware version 5.10 for its flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z9. Officially launched on 17th December 2024, the new update introduces a range of advanced video features designed to enhance the professional videography experience.
At the forefront of the update is the addition of a [Shutter mode] that allows users to set the shutter angle at one of 15 steps ranging between 5.6° and 360°. This new functionality eliminates the need to manually adjust the shutter speed whenever the frame rate is changed. Instead, videographers can now automatically maintain optimal motion blur, ensuring smoother results across different frame rates. This addition is particularly valuable for professionals looking to streamline their workflow and maintain consistency when capturing fast-paced footage or cinematic projects.
Alongside the shutter angle adjustment, Nikon has improved exposure monitoring capabilities in firmware v5.10. Users can now customise the zebra pattern display by changing its colour, making it easier to confirm exposure accuracy, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Additionally, the brightness information displays—including the histogram and waveform monitor—are now customisable in size, transparency, and position. These enhancements allow for greater flexibility and accuracy when checking exposure during high-contrast or complex scenes.
The latest firmware update highlights Nikon’s commitment to refining the Z9 as a go-to camera for both professional photographers and videographers. Since its release, the Z9 has set a benchmark for hybrid camera performance, offering exceptional 8K video recording, fast burst shooting, and industry-leading autofocus. With regular firmware updates like v5.10, Nikon ensures its flagship model remains competitive by addressing the evolving needs of creators.
Speaking about the release, Nikon stated that it continuously strives to improve its cameras through “regular firmware updates, providing useful functions” based on user feedback. The additions in v5.10 reflect Nikon’s focus on delivering tools that simplify professional workflows while maintaining the highest image and video quality standards.
