Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S in development

News

Nikon has announced its first Z-mount super-telephoto prime lens, the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is in development. It will be part of the S-Line of Nikkor Z-mount lenses, which means it will offer the highest optical performance that Nikon can muster.

Nikon also states that the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S will deliver ‘realistic and outstanding images’ with ‘beautiful bokeh and high-resolution’.

Having TC in the lens’ name indicates that it will have a 1.4x teleconverter built-in, taking its focal length to 560mm.

In addition, Nikon will use a new coating that has the highest anti-reflection performance in Nikkor history, so ghosting and flare should not be an issue.

According to Nikon, the handling and design of the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S will make it suitable for video recording as well as stills photography.

Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S price and availability

As yet there’s no information about the price of the Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, after all, this is just a development announcement. However, it’s aimed at professional photographers and it has a maximum aperture of f/2.8, so that plus the presence of a built-in teleconverter would indicate that it’s likely to be one of the most expensive lenses in the Nikon Z-mount lens lineup.

There’s also no information about the release date of the Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, but the winter Olympics in February next year would make a great launch platform.
