Nikon has formally announced the its latest full-frame DSLR, introducing the Nikon D850 – price tag £3,499.99 / €3,899, release date 7 September – to journalists in London.
Nikon announced the new camera’s development last month, but revealed no specifications, giving us no more than a sample video and a logo for the camera. Today we learn that the Nikon D850 boasts a 45.7-megapixel FX-format sensor that can deliver 45.4-megapixel files.
Like many Nikon cameras, the back-illuminated CMOS sensor has no optical low-pass filter, enabling it to resolve finer details.
Another signature feature of the Nikon D850 is the introduction of 4K video. Users can record full-frame movies in 4K/UHD movies at 30p, with no crop-factor, Nikon says.
Meanwhile, a new MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack will also enable you to record 4K video for more than three hours. The new battery pack also boosts the D850’s 7fps frame rate in burst mode to 9fps.
The Nikon D850 employs Nikon’s latest EXPEED 5 image processor, which delivers a native ISO range of 64 to 25,600 – and this is expandable from ISO 32 to 102,400. What’s more, this full ISO range is available in 4K video mode.
The new Nikon camera offers the same 153-point AF system as its sibling, the D5, with sensitivity down to -4EV at its central point.
There’s also a new in-camera 4K timelapse function, as well as a new option to save raw files in three sizes: Large (45.4MP), Medium (25.6MP) or Small (11.4MP). Both the Medium and SMall are 12-bit lossless compressed.
Other features include weather sealing and dual memory card slots for both a UHS-II SD card and an XQD card.
