Nikon confirms any new mirrorless camera will be full-frame

Nikon designs a new sensor

Nikon’s next mirrorless camera will feature a full-frame sensor, the company has confirmed in a new interview.

In an interview with the Chinese website Xitek, Nikon’s Group Imaging Division senior adviser Goto Teng said:

“Full-frame is the trend. If Nikon will go mirrorless it must be full-frame…

“Because Nikon has almost 60 year history of making cameras and we have been communicating with all kind of customers and listen to them. With such experience we are a level not those companies can be compared. If we were to introduce a mirrorless camera, we would not be like (other companies), such as pushing out a lot of models.

“We will lock in customer’s main requirement to introduce a new product. If fact before A9 was introduced, Sony went through a lot failure internally. Nikon has a lot more failure experience than Sony.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time the company has made such statements. Nikon has been openly telling us and others in the industry that it is working towards a full-frame mirrorless camera.

Its language has always been couched in terms like ‘considering’ and ‘would like’, though. And while Mr. Goto is still using that caveat of ‘if we were’ it’s the first time that Nikon has indicated that any new mirrorless camera will indeed be full-frame.

A full-frame Nikon mirrorless camera has been one of the most hotly anticipated camera rumours for more than a year – one that has been fuelled by Nikon itself.

It will once again go to the top of our list for 2018, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see an announcement sometime early in the new year.
