Zf gains bird detection, cloud features and manual lens tools

Nikon Zf firmware update v2.00
News

Nikon has announced a major firmware update for its retro-inspired full-frame mirrorless camera, the Nikon Zf. Firmware version 2.00, released on 8 April 2025, introduces an array of features inherited from higher-end Nikon mirrorless models such as the flagship Nikon Z9 and the advanced Nikon Z6III. The update delivers notable enhancements in autofocus, manual lens usability, and cloud connectivity.

The most significant addition is support for Nikon Imaging Cloud, allowing Zf users to automatically transfer images to third-party cloud services, receive firmware updates directly through the camera, and explore a broad selection of creative “Imaging Recipes.” This opens up a more streamlined and connected workflow for photographers who shoot on-the-go or prefer automatic backup and creative inspiration.

Bird photographers will also welcome the new dedicated birds subject-detection mode. Built on the advanced autofocus algorithms from the Z9, this feature improves detection accuracy and tracking performance, making it easier to capture sharp images of birds in motion.

Another new feature is Hi-Res Zoom, enabling lossless digital zoom while maintaining image quality. The update further enhances the shooting experience with manual-focus lenses, including vintage glass. Notably, users can now exit the magnified focus assist view simply by half-pressing the shutter-release button, streamlining the process. Additionally, the firmware can now record aperture values used during manual-focus shooting, a helpful improvement for both reference and post-processing.

Firmware version 2.00 reaffirms Nikon’s commitment to continual improvement, bringing advanced features from its top-tier cameras to the mid-range Zf model, and enhancing creative freedom for users across genres.
