Western Digital has announced the NVMe, a new high-performance SSD aimed at gamers but that is designed to handle 4K and Ultra HD video content.

The new WD solid state drive is for PCs that need to run intensive applications and quickly access and enable 4K video content. While this is a requirement in gaming, it’s also a fairly big need for videographers.

The Western Digital Black 3D NVMe SSD is currently only available in the United States in capacities of 250GB (price tag $119.99), 500GB ($229.99) and 1TB ($449.99). Prices and release dates for the rest of the world will be unveiled soon.

The new Western Digital NVMe drives will be available by late April 2018, the company says.

Western Digital’s new NVMe drive offers read speeds of up to 3,400 MB/s (for 1TB and 500GB model) and write performance of up to 2,8001MB/s for 1TB model. Other features include:

  • A new NVMe architecture and controller for optimised performance
  • Up to 500,000 random-read IOPs
  • Five-year limited warranty with up to 600TBW endurance
