New rules set out by the US Federal Aviation Association will restrict the use of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles near 10 national monuments.
The 10 landmarks designated as no-fly zones for drones include:
- Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York, NY
- Boston National Historical Park (U.S.S. Constitution), Boston, MA
- Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia, PA
- Folsom Dam; Folsom, CA
- Glen Canyon Dam; Lake Powell, AZ
- Grand Coulee Dam; Grand Coulee, WA
- Hoover Dam; Boulder City, NV
- Jefferson National Expansion Memorial; St. Louis, MO
- Mount Rushmore National Memorial; Keystone, SD
- Shasta Dam; Shasta Lake, CA
The new law means drone pilots will no longer be able to fly their aircraft within 400 feet of these national monuments. Anyone caught doing so could face criminal or civil penalties, according to the FAA.
The FAA says it received requests from both law enforcement and national security agencies to undertake the measures. A full list of restricted airspace is listed on the FAA website.
