Nikon has announced the latest ‘tough’ camera to its compact range, unveiling the 13.2-megapixel Nikon COOLPIX W100 – price tag £129.99 / €159 – which can shoot 10 metres underwater and in temperatures as low as -10C.

The Nikon W100 is also shockproof to 1.8 metres, Nikon says, is streamlined for simplicity. The W100 has dedicated one-touch buttons for all its major controls, and it even offers a children’s menu.

The new Nikon camera also employs what the company calls a BLE, Bluetooth low energy, technology, to allow photographers to shoot images and share them instantly with Nikon’s SnapBridge platform, which automatically transfers images to your smart device for storage and social sharing.

The Nikon W100 can also record full HD movies at 1080p with stereo sound and Electronic VR (Vibration Reduction).

On the back of the Nikon W100 is a 230k-dot 6.7cm/2.7in TFT LCD monitor. Meanwhile a new Smart portrait system activates features like Face-priority AF, which automatically detects your subject’s facial area and focuses on it, whilst the Underwater face framing takes shots automatically when it detects people’s faces in the sea or pool.

The Nikon W100 release date is set for 8 September 2016.
