The Mobile World Congress 2020 trade show has been canceled over fears of coronavirus, organisers GSM Association have announced.

The annual event in Barcelona was due to kick off at the end of this month, but concerns over the coronavirus epidemic in China prompted a number of high-profile firms to pull out of the event.

Among those who pulled out are Sony, LG, Nokia, Facebook, among others. Other firms such as Huawei pledged to attend, but GSMA announced today that Mobile World Congress 2020 has become ‘impossible’ to go ahead.

In a statement, GSMA chief executive John Hoffman said: “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020.”

Around 100,000 people attend the annual event.
