Metz has announced the mecablitz M400, a compact system flash unit designed for use with mirrorless cameras. As ever, Metz has produced the flash in multiple fittings and the new unit is suitable for Canon, Nikon, Micro Four Thirds, Pentax and Fuji cameras.

Powered by four AAA batteries the flash is fully compatible with chargable NiMH or standard alkaline-magnesium or lithium batteries.

The M400 is feature packed and as with any quality flash gun the Metz mecablitz M400 has a zoom swivel head covering a range of a 24-105mm lens. The head will rotate through 90° vertical and 360 horizontal. This equates to a guide number of 40 (in meters at ISO 100/21°) at the 105mm position.

All changes and adjustments can be easily read on the clear OLED display.

The M400 also packs in a slave mode and wireless TTL flash functionality which is dependent on your cameras feaures.

As using mirrorless cameras for video becomes more popular the M400 includes an adjustable LED modeling light (100 Lux @ 1m) along side the more usual built-in accessories of bounce card and wide-angle diffuser (12mm).

Other note worthy features include high-speed flash synchronisation, second-curtain sync and red-eye reduction. Making sure that the flash is future proof there’s also a USB interface for receiving firmware updates.
