Leica Camera has announced its fifth annual call for entries for the Leica Women Foto Project Award, inviting photographers from across the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, and Canada to submit visual stories. The competition, themed “Perspective is Power,” focuses on photo essays that highlight topics of resilience, reclamation, and rebirth.
Now in its second year as an international contest, the award aims to uplift diverse and under-represented voices in the world of visual storytelling. The Leica Women Foto Project was first launched to give a platform to the unique perspectives of women photographers, further promoting their contributions to the field. Winners from each region will receive a Leica SL2-S camera paired with a Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens, as well as a $10,000 USD cash prize.
Leica UK’s Managing Director, Farah Ahmad Perez, emphasised the significance of this initiative: “Encouraging the feminine viewpoint, this year focussing on reclamation, resilience, and rebirth, is fundamentally important to Leica, and we are all truly excited to witness the entries.” The call for entries runs from September 18, 2024, until November 8, 2024, with winners set to be revealed on March 8, 2024, to coincide with International Women’s Day.
A diverse group of industry experts, including award-winning photojournalists, editors from illustrious publications like Time Magazine and National Geographic, and influential figures from the media and photography worlds, will judge the submissions. The criteria for selection include the quality of photography, the depth of the project’s concept, and the applicant’s dedication to the medium.
Leica’s longstanding commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in photography is reflected in this award. The brand’s century-old reputation for quality and craftsmanship continues to inspire photographers globally. Through the Leica Women Foto Project, the company seeks to strengthen the presence of diverse perspectives in visual storytelling, with the hope of sparking meaningful conversations around the themes chosen for the competition.
To apply, photographers must be 21 years of age or older and legal residents of one of the four eligible countries. Applications can be submitted via the official Leica Women Foto Project website, where terms and conditions are also available.
